Samhain is a spiritual celebration of the cycles of life and the spirit world, while Halloween is a modern, more commercialized version that blends both ancient traditions and more lighthearted activities. Halloween, on the other hand, is the modern, secularized version of Samhain, influenced by Christian traditions. It became known as “All Hallows’ Eve” (the night before All Saints’ Day on November 1) and gradually evolved into the Halloween we know today, focusing more on fun, costumes, and trick-or-treating. While some spiritual aspects of Samhain remain, Halloween has shifted to being more of a playful and festive holiday in many cultures, with less emphasis on its original spiritual significance.
This makes the fairy tale like myths, and like songs, and like decorations on embroidery or on the roofs of those fanciful Russian houses. The myth says to the poet, “Take me into your contemplation and give me a final form and body.” And Homer, Ovid, Goethe, Wagner, and Pushkin all answered the myth. The song says to all singers, “Take me sleeping with hands above head your hearing and your soul and sing me from your own depths, as God inspires you.” And all minstrels, minnesingers, harpists, and folk composers answer the call. Finally, we forgive fairy tales because they believe in their own way of seeing the world. The fairy tale considers the events of its own telling with reverence. It lives by its images and awaits its resolution, its final sigh, in the sincerity of those same images.
We tend to think of depression in purely natural terms—a mental illness that is treated solely with medication and counseling. Since we, as Catholics, believe the whole person is both body and soul, it is possible to have spiritual causes and/or physical and psychological causes of depression. This may sound odd, but I dare say that I enjoyed having COVID – and not in a masochistic way.

However, a relationship with God that is devoid of meaning may contribute to poorer well-being and a worse relationship with one’s spouse. One potential pitfall of spirituality is a phenomenon known as spiritual bypassing. This involves a tendency to use spirituality as a way to avoid or sidestep problems, emotions, or conflicts. Dreaming of the dead like I did might seem unusual—even startling, if you’re the one having the dream. In fact, God might be trying to tell you something in the dream.
Their long journey reminds us that the spiritual life is a pilgrimage requiring perseverance, and that Christ calls all peoples to himself. Participating in Christmas liturgies and traditions can also deepen our faith by connecting us more fully to the broader Christian community and to the rich heritage of our faith. The celebration of Christmas invites us into a deeper contemplation of the mystery of the Incarnation. As we reflect on God becoming human in Jesus Christ, we are challenged to consider what this means for our own humanity and our relationship with the divine. This contemplation can lead to a powerful sense of God’s love and nearness, fostering a more intimate connection with Him. Participating more fully in the liturgical life of the Church during Advent and Christmas can also deepen our spiritual experience.
Health and Social Care Partnerships (HSCPs) and care providers should consider how service users and care staff can access community based support models in partnership with the third sector and the belief communities. This same light is also in everyone you know and in everyone you will ever know in the future. You may think you’re limited to just your physical body and state of affairs — including your gender, race, family, job, and status in life — but spirituality comes in and says “there is more than this.” Achieving greater mindfulness
