What is Form I-765 used for?

Certain foreign nationals, who are qualified to work in the United States, use Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, to request consent to work. When hiring employees, U.S. companies should request evidence of the worker’s right to work.

U.S. residents and lawful long-term residents (green card holders) may work without requesting special consent. Some nonimmigrants, short-term in nature, might be granted work authorization upon request from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). However, not all nonimmigrants are qualified for this advantage. Individuals given employment permission with an accepted Form I-765 get an employment permission document.
